Background to the Petition
The Middlewood Way area is a very popular attraction for an increasing number of visitors who come for activities such as walking, cycling, fishing and horse riding. The park off Shrigley Road is used by children of all ages and the area is a haven for dog walkers. The entrance to the park is on the bend itself. Elm Beds Lane is off the bend, this leads to a caravan site and a residential area.
Over the years there has also been an increase in the amount of traffic along Shrigley Road. The bridge over the Middlewood Way has a very sharp 90 degree, blind bend. There is no pavement on either side of the road along the bridge. This is a dangerous bend. There have been numerous incidents involving vehicles approaching too fast for such an extremely tight corner and narrow bridge, which make it difficult for pedestrians or animals to be seen.
A very recent incident resulted in injury to a pedestrian and the death of their dog.
Cheshire East Council must introduce safety measures urgently for the safety of pedestrians, vehicle passengers and animals alike.
The Petition
Cheshire East Council must implement road safety measures immediately to this dangerous bend over a narrow bridge, on Shrigley Road in Higher Poynton.
We propose the following features be taken into consideration.
• Improved visible signage: “sharp bend ahead”, “children-at- play”, “pedestrians in road”, “cyclists in road”, “park entrance” etc
• Reduced speed limit on approach to the bend
• Bar markings on road on either side of bridge (visual and physical effect to slow traffic)
• Safety barrier at park entrance
These are inexpensive safety measures, which are essential for the safety of the residents and numerous other visitors/road users of Shrigley Road, the canal and the Middlewood Way.
