SOS --- RELEASE RAUF KASHMIRI

Rauf Kashmiri is a Kashmiri freedom fighter languishing in Indian jails for last 13 years. Rauf Kashmiri was arrested on 23-06-1991 by police in Indian Controlled Kashmir.
He was charged with illegal crossing the Line of Control (LoC), a border line dividing Kashmir into Indian controlled and Pakistani controlled regions.

He was produced before a special court in Jammu after years of detention. For a crime, he could have been imprisoned for a six-month term; he was sentenced to a five-year term by the court.

Since he had already been languishing in jails for nine years, the court therefore ordered his release on 11 September 2000.

The Pakistan government however refused to take him back. He was therefore detained in an Indian jail under Public Safety Act (PSA) until Sept. 2005. He is since detained in Jodhpur Central Jail. 34200 Jodhpur, Rajasthan. India. (Any post can be sent to Rauf on this address). His PC number is: 182101.

On approached by Rauf Kashmiris family and friends, ICRC sent a delegation to visit Rauf Kashmiri in Jodhpur.

The ICRC has advised to approach UNHCR as a possible solution (complete ICRC email reply is attached below).

Meantime, Raufs family living in Palandri sub-district of Pakistani Controlled Kashmir, is suffering hardships. His only son Babur Rauf, born six month after his detention, has yet to see his father. Raufs father and mother died, in 1994 and 1995 respectively, in his absence. Death of his parents has exposed his wife and son to insecure economic situation.
Born in 1966, Rauf Kashmiri has spent almost one-third of his life behind the bar. Ironically, Rauf born in Gorah village of Pallandri in Pakistani controlled Kashmir, was arrested from his native village Surinkot in Poonch district of Indian controlled Kashmir. His family had to migrate to other side of the Line of Control (LoC). The people of Kashmir do not accept this imposed division and demand a free movement of Kashmiris across Line of Control (LoC).

Rauf Kashmiris detention and situation demands an immediate attention.
Please send protest letters to governments of Pakistan and India on addresses below.

Also, send solidarity messages to Rauf Khan and his family.

Also, approach human rights bodies in your respective countries.

In solidarity,

Talat Butt
