The BBC is well aware of the local anger that exists at Mike Ashley's arbitrary decision to attempt to rubbish one hundred and thirty years of Newcastle United history by attmpting to change the name of St James' Park to one which promotes his shop.
St James' Park is an iconic part of the city skyline. It is part of the soul of Newcastle and it as much wrong to refer to the old football ground after the name of a shop as it would be to call the Tyne Bridge anything other than the Tyne Bridge.
To their immense credit, large sections of te media have declined to refer to St James' Park by anything other than St James' Park.
However, shamefully, the BBC, well aware of sentiment across Tyneside and then North East in general as well as amongst those who take the traditions of an ancient city and a prominent football club seriously have chosen to adopt this new aberration of a name whilst others have not.
The BBC should respond to the wishes of licence payers amongst the Newcastle United community and refer to the home of Newcastle United by its historic name, St James' Park and should refuse to bend to the fancy of one man's commercial interests.
We the undersigned call upon the BBC to drop any references to the Newcastle United stadium that are not, St James' Park.
