We, the undersigned, as concerned citizens and as responsible, caring adults, would like to see TLCs Toddlers and Tiaras to be taken off the air. We also want to see a new law protecting children from being exploited by the corporations that support and regulate child pageantry. One that recognizes child beauty pageants as harmful for childrens development and that prohibits children under the age of 16 to be entered into beauty pageants by their parents, before the child can consent for him/herself.
Pageants bring in a lot of capital for those who run them. Giroux (1998 taken from Nymphet Fantasies: Child Beauty Pageants and the Politics of Innocence http://is.gd/dsgGh ) states that promoters make as much as $100,000 on each pageant... In addition, child beauty pageants have produced a number of support industries, including costume designers, grooming consultants, interview coaches, photographers, publishers, cosmetics and weight reduction along other beauty-aid-industries (p. 40) for as young as 8 month old contestants. In addition, self-esteem is being defined within a very narrow standard of autonomy, one that is based solely on appearance (Giroux, 1998, p. 41).
Exploitation is defined as, making full use and deriving benefits from a source for one's own needs, in this case the sources are children and their families. Therefore, child beauty pageants are a form of child exploitation for the benefit of the corporations that support and regulate child pageantry. Due to this exploitation and borderline child abuse, this issue needs to be addressed and no longer condoned by society, reinforced through legal action and parental education.

Pageants are a disgusting practice and a way for parents to use their children to live out their own pathetic dreams. Beauty is not what our society dictates! It is all around us! Especially in our children just being the way they naturally are!
