A PETITION CONCERNING CRUELTY TO NONHUMAN PRIMATES IN LABORATORIES AT COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY (MORE INFORMATION CAN BE FOUND AT WWW.COLUMBIACRUELTY.COM)
WE, THE UNDERSIGNED, DRAW PRESIDENT LEE C. BOLLINGERS ATTENTION TO THE FOLLOWING:
THAT the use of nonhuman primates in experimentation is a controversial issue with a majority of people expressing disapproval of such use in polls conducted by the Foundation for Biomedical Research and New Scientist.
THAT Columbia Universitys Michel Ferin surgically implants heavy pipes into monkeys skulls to study the connection between stress and the menstrual cycle.
THAT Columbia Universitys Raymond Stark pumps nicotine into stressed pregnant baboons and performs surgery on the fetuses while they are still in utero.
THAT Columbia Universitys Edward S. Connolly conducted experiments in which he removed the eyes of baboons, inserted a clamp through their empty eye sockets, and induced strokes in the baboons.
THAT Dr. Catherine DellOrto, a veterinarian and postdoctoral fellow at Columbia, documented grotesque abuses to animals in the protocols described above as experimenters failed to provide adequate postsurgical pain relief, leaving animals in distress and pain without adequate veterinary care.
THEREFORE, YOUR PETITIONERS CALL UPON YOUR OFFICE TO PROTECT BOTH THE ANIMALS IN COLUMBIAS LABORATORIES AND THE REPUTATION OF COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY BY:
(1) INSTITUTING A MORE TRANSPARENT RESEARCH SYSTEM IN WHICH COLUMBIA STUDENTS CAN EASILY ACCESS ALL ABSTRACTS FOR ONGOING RESEARCH EXPERIMENTS INVOLVING ANIMALS AT HEALTH SCIENCES; AND
(2) PERMANENTLY ENDING THE CRUDE, CRUEL, AND POINTLESS EXPERIMENTS OF EDWARD S. CONNOLLY, MICHEL FERIN, AND RAYMOND STARK.
