AN OPEN LETTER TO SONIA GANDHI

To,
Ms Sonia Gandhi, President
Congress Party,
India

Madam,

We, the concerned citizens of Mumbai, wish to remind you that early this year your party was voted to power at the centre on the promise of 'reforms with a human face.' Later this year, the Congress-NCP coalition was voted back to power in Maharashtra because your party secured a majority of assembly seats in Mumbai on the promise that all the pre-2000 slums in Mumbai would be protected and regularised.

And yet, in a quick reversal, Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Vilasrao Deshmukh of the Congress has ordered the demolition of all post-1995 slums in the city. He now claims that he is 'bound by law' to demolish these slums even as he dithers on the electoral promise of protecting all pre-2000 slums.

In the last few weeks, thousands of so-called illegal houses of the poor citizens of Mumbai have been demolished. Lakhs of people have been rendered homeless. Thousands of these people are being forced to leave Mumbai. This demolition spree now threatens to be the nightmare of the slum dwellers in Mumbai.

We wish to remind you that almost half the citizens of Mumbai live in slums for lack of proper and affordable housing. These people are the working class of the city. They perform thousands of routine jobs that make it possible for the city to be the financial and industrial capital of the country.

Surely, these demolitions are not the 'human face' that you and your party talked about during both the Lok Sabha and the assembly elections in 2004. Surely, the Shanghai model of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for Mumbai does not mean throwing out its lakhs of poor residents so brutally and callously!

We strongly protest against this demolition drive against the slums by your Chief Minister. We request you to personally intervene as the chief of the Congress Party and ask your Chief Minister to immediately halt these demolitions till a suitable housing policy is formulated at the national and state level to provide housing for all. Otherwise along with Vilasrao Deshmukh you will also be morally responsible for causing a human disaster of mammoth proportion.
