Stop President Bush's Proposal to Cut Student Loan Program

We oppose the Bush Administration's recent proposal to slash $1.3 billion from the student loan program by requiring students to pay higher interest rates on loan consolidation. A tax-increase-in-disguise both for current students and for those who have already graduated, these cuts could cost the average student loan-holder $10,000 more in interest over the life of his or her loan. Without student loans, many young people would not be able to go to college. By putting loans out of reach, the President is blocking millions of Americans' path to a brighter future.

We are especially concerned about this plan, as 59\% of 13 million single parent women in this country pursue higher education to better their lives and that of their children. Many are dependent upon raising their standard of living through education as the primary if not sole financial provider for their families.

The future of our children and our country depends on an educated and skilled workforce. By proposing cuts to the student loan program, President Bush is gambling with our future. I am deeply disappointed in the President's proposal and sign this petition urging President Bush to reconsider these short-sighted cuts.
