Lingerie football is degrading towards women. This league will further entrench oppressive patriarchal ideals within our society. One would never see men running around playing a sport in lingerie on live T.V. Women should not be placed in this role either. This type of league is furthering sexist stereotypes. It indicates that the worth of a female is directly related to her appearance. It sexualizes and trivializes female sports and it should be stopped. Yes, women are willingly participating in these events, however arguably because of internalized oppression. Women have been told time after time that our value lies in our appearance and our worth and purpose lie in our sexuality. Women are more than the sum of their body parts.
This league is a backlash to feminist movements fighting for equal rights and treatment of women. We must take a stand and protect the progress we have made over the past few decades. In the past year, Saskatoon has made huge gains in adding a legitimate Women’s tackle football team to the many sport opportunities offered in our city. Payers on this team have worked hard to make this strong and positive opportunity available for other young women. This lingerie league is a slap in the face!
If the media continues to portray women in degrading and sexualized roles there is little hope to fostering generation of self-confident and empowered women. We risk further damaging the impressionable minds of young women. Think of your daughter, sister, or wife participating in this sexualized activity; Think of the message sent to women around the world. There are many media outlets that display negative messages about women and sexuality. Let’s not add to the montage of degrading and sexualized images of women for the sake of making a profit. It is time we start placing human rights before economic gain.
