The Australian government have focused on the cost of health in regards to tobacco use and created a tobacco tax to apparantly cover these costs to our public health system.
We are all aware that the use of tobacco causes significant health problems in users, however tabocco is still a legal substance in Australia, and it is usually the lowest income earners in our society that really struggle with nicotine addiction.
The Quit helplines and the once yearly reduced cost nicotine patch prescriptions are the only things provided by the government from this enormous tax revenue, and it is simply not enough to help people battling this addiction.
The government have used this tax to hike up the price of cigarettes at an exceptional rate with no cap. This means they can increase the price of tobacco at any time they desire without returning any assistance to those still struggling. Australia has the most expensive tobacco in the world.
I put to the Australian government that you reduce the cost of tobacco and cap the tax at a certain percent, or use the revenue to open up free clinics for people struggling with nicotine addiction, as those on illegal drugs receive.
This tax is nothing more than robbery to those people who can least afford it and it needs to end or change NOW.
