We are extremely upset to learn that the government of Quйbec is considering giving $58 million financing to an anonymous consortium of investors so that they can open a new asbestos mine in the town of Asbestos. Asbestos, a known human carcinogen, claims more that 100,000 lives every year. We know, we have buried our loved ones and fight these preventable diseases every day.

Hear our plea: stop mining and exporting Canadian asbestos. Quйbec's medical and health authorities oppose this mine project and have called on the Quйbec government to stop the mining and export of asbestos, saying that these activities are medically unacceptable. The World Health Organization, the International Labour Organization and the International Trade Union Confederation, representing 176 million workers in 151 countries have all called for an end to the use of any form of asbestos, including chrysotile asbestos, which represents 100\% of the global asbestos trade.

The time is now to embrace policy that protects public health, not only in Canada, but throughout Asia. The Canadian government has the opportunity and responsibility to end the deadly asbestos legacy.

Our global borders are indistinguishable and the world is watching as history is being made through your local and international decisions. For the sake of of humanity, we urge you stop mining and exporting asbestos that continues to torture and kill innocent people around the world.
