Student Aid Reform

This letter is in regards to the current qualifications set by State and Federal Governments for students to receive free financial aid. It is my belief that the current prerequisits for student aid are unfair to many students who are struggling to afford a post-secondary education while at the same time either living on their own, or in some unfortunate cases living at home with their parents and still not being able to afford college. The FAFSA application overlooks many circumstances which would make some struggling students and families eligible for aid, while conversely students and families who can afford to pay for college are receiving Federal and State aid. This creates a real problem in the U.S., since college is a necessity for almost every citizen who hopes to live a comfortable life and provide decently for their family. I feel that serious reform of the application for student aid is needed to combat this issue, allowing more Americans of all ages the opportunity for an affordable college education, which can only make our country stronger. An educated public has been shown to have a reduced crime rate, lower healthcare costs and would significantly reduce, if not almost do away with, the need for welfare. The benefits of a reform to the student aid requirements would not happen immidiately, but certainly over time would improve the economy and the quality of life for not only Americans, but presumably other nations who depend on our economy and healthcare as well. I ask that a broader set of questions be asked in the application, including taking into account if a student is living on their own, students coming from abusive and broken homes, and for parents who have filed bankruptcy and cannot afford college no matter their income. Again I ask that you make these changes on behalf of an improved future for all Americans and other countrymen alike. I thank you for your time in reading this letter and hope you will seriously consider this request.
Sincerely,
The Undersigned
