Regarding the subdivision of land and construction of three condominiums at the northeast corner lot at the intersection of Summer Street and Benton Road (AKA One Benton Road).
We, the undersigned, are opposed to the granting of permission by the City to MLM Realty Trust to subdivide the existing land parcel into two separate parcels. We are opposed to the construction of building(s) on this site.
We ask the Planning Board to reject the request of MLM Realty and Richard Di Girolamo to grant zoning exceptions under SZO 5.5 and 8.8 and allow subdivision and construction on this site for the following reasons:
*New construction on this site would be damaging to the Westwood Road and Spring Hill Historic Districts. Additional construction would not be sensitive to the infrastructure of the area.
*New construction on this site would damage the Mystic River and Charles River conservation districts. The Property is located at the meeting place of the watersheds for these two conservation districts.
*Somerville is already the most paved over and built upon city in the state, with 77\% of its area paved over (Boston Globe, Monday April 5, 2010). "Pavement is a culprit in flooding. Hard surfaces worsen runoff, contamination during heavy rain." The new construction would pave over and build upon existing open space.
*The treatment of the Giobbe house on the site at 1 Benton Road has been in effect an essential destruction of the historic charachter and design integrity of this house. Three condos have been constructed within the newly changed exterior of this house. The remodeling of the house at 1 Benton Road has NOT maintained, protected, or enhanced this building, listed on the National Historic Register.
*The work already done on the site gives us no confidence that further building would be of good workmanship and design.
