We the undersigned request that you introduce new legislation to allow Irish citizens, who through the nature of their work must spend long periods of time abroad, to nominate a proxy voter to cast their ballots in their absence at local, national and European elections.
We seafarers, offshore workers, airline crew and citizens with other similar working arrangements contribute greatly to the economy of this country and to the fabric of our local communities. However we are disenfranchised by being unable to vote in elections because of the nature of our work.
In many other countries, people in our situation can nominate a proxy to vote on their behalf. We hope that you will legislate for a similar accommodation before the next local elections.
