Letter written by: Nivedita Nadkarni, Suvid Nadkarni, Arjun Arunachalam and others to the members of parliament, government of India
An appeal to all Indian citizens
This petition is addressed to all the law abiding citizens of India. We the people of India should be proud of the way the Supreme Court has conducted itself in lieu of all the allegations and controversies that have been raked up recently. The conduct of the members of Parliament and in particular, that of the Speaker, Somnath Chatterjee has been particularly reprehensible. The Speaker has also tried to question a ruling of the Supreme Court with regards to the Bihar elections. However, a higher authority overruled his apparent concerns. In response to the Courts reprimand to conduct themselves in a manner fitting of a member of parliament, the MPs reacted most aggressively. They made statements questioning the authority of the court and sought to override it saying that only the Prime Minister had the authority if at all to reprimand them. In all of this, it is unfortunate that neither the Prime Minister nor the President suggested restraint on the part of the MPs.
The MPs reaction suggested that they were visibly affronted by the Courts reaction to their shenanigans. This means that there exists a clear lack of accountability in so far as the actions and behavior of the members of the parliament is concerned.
The crux of the matter is that the MPs have started openly questioning the judiciary. In another particularly disturbing piece of news, the parliament asked the SC not to entertain a petition from an individual that questions the utility of reservations.
From these incidents it is clear that the politicians believe that they are above the law. A lot of furor has been generated by these remarks. We, the petitioners wish to show solidarity with the Judiciary, which is probably the only Institution that has escaped the taint of politics so far. As the people who elect these representatives, we must send a clear signal saying that we do not approve of, neither endorse the manner in which respected members of parliament have conducted themselves.
Therefore, we sincerely appeal to whomsoever reads the petition to kindly take up the case on behalf of the judiciary before the state of affairs of the whole country is reduced akin to the state of Bihar. Please sign the petition and forward it to all.
