We the undersigned citizens and residents of Wilkes County respectfully request that the Wilkes County Board of Commissioners implement a budget amendment to immediately increase funding to the Wilkes County Public Library by $22,000, the amount needed to avoid another severe cut in personnel and services. We find it unacceptable that funding for this vital community service has been reduced by 28\% since 2008. We recommend that the funding cuts be recouped, and that in future budget cycles the library budget be increased in proportion with other important civic services.
While no one is unaware that we are currently in difficult economic times, we submit that it is the duty of the Board to manage the county budget in an evenhanded manner, by spreading the necessary cost constraints over all aspects of community life. In this 21st century, we must have a literate work force for a robust local economy. Our public library effectively promotes the value of literacy and provides access to literacy services. In addition, the resources and programs available at the library are a mainstay of cultural life in our community and deserve to be recognized as such and supported.
