The mission of this campaign is to Test 1 Million people of color by June 1st, 2010. While Blacks comprise only 12\% of the US population, they account for 49\% of the AIDS cases diagnosed in 2006, 45\% of the new HIV infections, and 46\% of the people living with HIV (Kaiser Family Foundation, 2008).
Black Americans continue to be disproportionately affected, on every level by HIV/AIDS compared to members of other races and ethnicities. In 2005, the rate of AIDS diagnoses for Black adults and adolescents was 10 times the rate for Whites and nearly 3 times the rate for Hispanics.
The rate of AIDS diagnoses for Black women was nearly 23 times the rate for White women, and the rate of AIDS diagnoses for Black men was 8 times the rate for white men (CDC, 2008).
The goal for the Test 1 Million Boston Coalition is to test 5,000 people in Massachusetts.
