The Preservation

Dear Concerned Citizens:

We are petitioning today to preserve Historic Elmwood/Pinewood Cemetery. These Cemeteries are in danger of being carved up in the name of progress and development. Elmwood/Pinewood Cemetery is seriously being considered again in planning for a train system, that would include a rail expansion. This expansion can cut into parts of Elmwood/Pinewood Cemetery. We need to make the whole cemetery inaccessible to developers by preserving it all together.
We oppose any development to the Historic Elmwood /Pinewood Cemetery. This shall encompass any type of: Road Expansion, Trails, Train /Rail, the Cemetery as a Park, Major Tours, and Removal of any graves or plots. In the name of development!

The next proposed development on the agenda of City Council is the Amtrak Rail Proposal. If approved the Cemetery could be rezoned and graves again can be threatened.
The proposal speaks of track expansion. To place the Rails needed into the area, they would need to exhume graves and headstones in the cemeteries.

The City of Charlotte has many plans for several years of development just waiting to be started. The City Council does have alternative means to the plans open to them. Then why again dont they use those alternate plans?

Elmwood/Pinewood Cemetery is in serious danger of being lost. Our past and our childrens history will be wiped out by a swipe of a developers pen.
We have lost so many historic places in the name of development, lets not lose another.
Now it is the threat of the Cemetery to be re-zoned for the Rail Train Project. The Cemetery will be carved down little by little after that.
Elmwood/Pinewood Cemetery holds the very blood of Charlotte and the Charlotteans who helped make this City and Country what it is today.
