The public Demands An End to SeaWorlds Captive Orca and Dolphin Breeding Programs

SeaWorld is the leading facility regarding captive orca and dolphin breeding programs. SeaWorld claims to be a family facility, yet when it comes to orca and dolphin families they have a total disregard to their family structure. Dolphins and orcas are self-aware beings. They are intelligent, sentient beings. Sentient is described as endowed with feeling and unstructured consciousness. Both orcas and dolphins have very complex social structures which can not be mimicked in captivity.

In the wild orcas create pods, made up of a matriarch female and her off spring. In the wild the majority of male orcas remain with their mothers their entire lives. Orcas have very close bonds with their family members. At SeaWorld the orcas are generally not kept with their family members. The stress captivity creates raises issues of inbreeding, fighting, and premature death of family members including even total rejection of family members. These actions are forcing SeaWorld to split up family members and move them to other parks. Orcas in captivity are dying prematurely. Orcas in captivity are killing humans and inflicting harm upon their trainers. Orcas in the wild never harm humans. This alone proves captivity for orcas is very stressful and not working for them.

Dolphins live in close knit groups displaying social behavior which is one of the most complex and advanced in the animal kingdom. If another bottle-nose dolphin is drowning, other dolphins will come to its aid, supporting it with their bodies so its blowhole is above the water allowing it to breathe. Large adult males offer protection for the females and babies. "Scouting behavior" has been observed in bottle-nose dolphins where an individual investigates novel objects or unfamiliar territories and reports back to the pod. Dolphins in captivity are never kept in large pods like what is seen in the wild. In captivity dolphins are denied their rights to establish pods. Instead the majority of dolphins are forced to interact with
un-trained humans during swim with dolphin programs.
Dolphins are large, powerful and aggressive animals. There are dangers to humans that come with swimming with dolphins in captivity, from attacks to transmitted diseases. There is no governing agent which regulates human/dolphin interactions any longer.

SeaWorld is making a huge profit off of breeding orcas and dolphins through loaning them out to other facilities to be used in swim with dolphin programs and/or to supply other facilities with orcas/dolphins for shows and breeding. This has resulted in a recent inbreed orca being born, once again. SeaWorld has become sort of like a puppy mill for marine mammals, supplying the majority of the world with marine mammals. SeaWorld claims the breeding programs are beneficial by offering education to the public along with stopping the taking of wild dolphins and orcas.

Orcas and dolphins belong in the wild not in parks. Nature never intended these animals to be placed in captivity; they have very specific roles they play regarding ocean environmental issues. It is time to demand an end to captive breeding. SeaWorld can phase out their captive orcas and dolphins by not replacing the ones that die or are moved to other parks. SeaWorld can teach respect for these animals by ending the idea that captivity works for them. SeaWorld sets the standards for keeping these animals in captivity; if SeaWorld would end, the other parks would eventually be forced to follow. It started with SeaWorld, let it end with SeaWorld.
