We, the undersigned, wholly oppose the proposals regarding labelling of Halal meat. They are discriminatory, misleading and ambiguous. We believe all consumers, both Muslim and non-Muslim, have the right to clear labelling on their meat, to clarify how it was produced, so that they can make an informed decision.
An overwhelming majority of the Muslim community have reaffirmed that only meat produced by non-stunning methods can be considered Halal.
This is proven by findings in The EBLEX report 2010, which can be found at: http://www.eblex.org.uk/documents/content/news/p_cp_eblex_halal_meat_final_111110.pdf
- Over 80% of Muslim consumers asked agreed that: the animal should be
conscious at the time of slaughter.
- Over 75% believed that stunning was Haram (not permissible).
In regards to labelling we, the undersigned, kindly request the honourable Minister to amend labelling legislation to reflect Islamic Shariah Law, and consider the following:
1. All meat slaughtered non-stunned, by a practising Muslim, should be labelled as ‘Halal Non-Stunned’
2. All meat from animals slaughtered by any means of stunning (whether by captive bolts, electrical head stunning, water bath stunning) should be clearly labelled as ‘Produced by Stunning’, and the term ‘Halal’ should not be used.
We oppose any ambiguous labelling terminology for meat that could further confuse Muslim consumers, such as the term ‘Religious Slaughter’.
