To Prohibit Academic Discrimination Against Students Because Of Their Service In The Armed Forces

By signing this petition, you support a university policy that protects UCCS students from academic and financial repercussions due to unforeseen military deployments.

The primary issue arises when students grades are negatively impacted due to missed class time. There is a great variance between how different instructors handle these absences. For example, some instructors will penalize students for missed attendance and some instructors will not. This results in an unfair grading system across the campus wide.

One secondary issue that needs to be addressed is how students financial obligations are handled by the university. We believe that a student who is forced to withdraw from classes due to a military deployment should not be penalized financially. There should be alternate solutions provided other than being left with significant financial debts.


Our military students have made great sacrifices for our country. They have deployed in support of operations such as Hurricane Katrina and the Iraqi war. This has meant that they have had to take time away from their academic careers in order to protect our homeland and freedom. Now it is time for us to do our part in protecting them from academic reprisals.
