University of Rhode Island Commuter Parking

We, the undersigned, disapprove of the current commuter parking situation at the University of Rhode Island. Currently there not enough parking spots for commuters and the spots that do exist are inconveniently located.
The recently enacted URI parking plan removed commuter parking from the Fine Arts lot and converted it to Resident/Faculty/Visitor parking. It also removed parking from the south side of Flagg Road due to safety concerns. It seems that instead of alleviating the problems this caused to commuters, the administration choose to ignore the problem by adding no new parking for the Fall 2004 semester. Commuter students also feel that is unfair to be charged the same fees as last year ($100) for dramatically worse parking conditions.
We demand that the URI Office of Parking and Information Services act to remedy these problems. The most obvious solution seems to be that more parking must be constructed. Another suggestion would be to move Resident/Faculty/Visitor parking to the Plains Road lot, and move commuter parking back to the Fine Arts lot. This way, commuters would be closer to classrooms, and residential parking will be closer to the dorms.
We hope that Parking Services will realize that student satisfaction is the best way to increase school reputation and maintain student loyalty. Instead of tailoring the URI parking structure around the comfort of other groups, we demand that the University suits the parking needs of its commuting student body.
