Dear President Mark A. Emmert,
The Save Darfur Coalition: University of Washington is a student organization established in response to the ongoing genocide in the Darfur region of the Sudan. This Genocide, being undertaken by government sponsored militias called Janjaweed, has taken the lives of over 300,000 individuals in the past year, and created over 1.2 million refugees. The U.S. government, historically reluctant to use the word, has even called the crisis Genocide. Genocide is a crime against humanity that responsible Institutions are obliged to oppose. In Darfur, we have the ability, and the responsibility, to act to end these horrific crimes against humanity.
We, the undersigned organizations and individuals, hereby call upon the University of Washington to publicly divest from all companies doing business with the Sudanese regime (a full list of which is available at http://sudandivestment.com/divesting.html). Furthermore, we urge President Emmert to publicly state that the University of Washington will not invest in any corporation that conducts business with the Sudanese government for as long as Sudan is in violation of international rules of human rights. As a responsible institution, the University has a moral obligation to send a clear message to the Sudanese regime and the corporations who fund the Genocide; if you do business with Genocide we wont do business with you. We cannot stand idly by while these crimes are perpetrated. We the undersigned stand united in the aforementioned goals and call on the administration to take action immediately against Genocide.
