NO TAXES OR TOLLS FOREVER!
Are you tired of paying tolls on the Dulles Toll Road? 400,000 times a day, since the road opened, we have been dipping into our pockets to put a total of more than $400 million into the hands of Virginias thankless politicians. The road has been paid for already many times over.
What did we get for it? A substandard highway with noncompliant 11 foot lane widths, substandard shoulders, and deficient incident management (accidents)- the cause of about half our local congestion delay.
So what do the politicians propose? Taxing and tolling the highway even more! The must think we are like trained gerbils, lazy and stupid with nothing better to do with our time.
The plans for Dulles rail will put $3 billion of financing on the roadway of 22 miles, plus another $1 billion in local taxes (special tax districts and higher airline ticket fees), plus the obligation to support Dulles Rail operating deficits of $110 million per year. Add it up and its about $250 million per mile.
What does this mean for tolls? Well, the surrounding highways are priced as follows: The Dulles Greenway carries $50 million in debt per mile and is allowed soon to charge $4.80 for a one way ride. On the Capital Beltway, the cost will be around $100 million per mile and tolls are projected at more than $10 one way peak-period.
So, they are setting us up for three times these outrageous numbers!
Is there an alternative? You bet. Dump the train and tear down the toll plazas forever, Abolish the special tax districts and the Airline Ticket surcharge. Upgrade the outer four lanes to Interstate Standards and call it I-267free. The inner two lanes, with the chance to add another lane, can be used as HOT lanes for non-airport traffic, as is being planned for I-495, I-395, and the Baltimore freeways.
What do we get for higher taxes and higher tolls? NO CONGESTION RELIEF! All studies have shown stop-and-go traffic on the Dulles Corridor will occur whether or not rail is built. HOT lanes, as additional capacity, along with better incident management is the answer.

Why are we forced to do this? Because the politicians have been bought off by the rail promoters and wont put it on the ballot. So we are doing a "virtual referendum".
