Gairsain is a village in Chamoli district in central Uttarakhand, India, which should be the state's future capital. The site was chosen in 1994 by the supporters of the separate Uttarakhand state movement because of its central location close to the border of the Garhwal and Kumaon regions. The provisional capital of Uttarakhand has been Dehradun, the largest city in the region, since the state's inception in 2000. According to an old tale the name Gairsain comes from the Garhwali language. "Gair" means 'deep' and "sain" means 'plain', refering to a place such as a valley, a plain area at the foot of hills. Gairsain is one of the most beautiful places in Uttarakhand. Gairsain is 9800 ft above sea level. The construction area in Gairsain is larger than that in Dehradun.
