PETITION
We the undersigned concerned citizens of Pennsylvania do hereby urge the restoration of library funding for Pennsylvania libraries to its previous level of $75 million. The current budget shortchanges library users statewide by $27.3 million dollars. Next years proposed budget, if not increased by the General Assembly, will result in another shortage of $23 milliona loss of $50 million in library services in just two years.
With the loss in funding, we cannot maintain previous service hours. Closing our libraries earlier reduces costs, which are no longer supported by state aid. The purchase of books and other library materials has been significantly reduced to try to stay within our budget.
Nationally, the average of total library operating expenditures was about $27 per capita in 2001. This figure includes state, local and private fundraising dollars. Library expenditures by state are as follow;
Pennsylvania, $22 per capita (before the budget cuts)
Maryland, $34
New Jersey, $36
New York, $46
and Ohio, $51 per capita.
We hope that people can take time to let their legislators know how this severe cut will impair our libraries ability to meet their needs. Please sign this petition, and also contact your legislator.
