Urge the Chinese Government to release
Liu Xiaobo to receive the Nobel Peace Prize

Dear President Hu,

Mr. Liu Xiaobo is a celebrated dissident in China. He has been at the forefront of the campaign for democracy and human rights in China for decades. In 2008, together with other Chinese intellectuals, he authored and promoted Charter 08 as a manifesto of the aspirations of the Chinese people for constitutional democracy, freedom, human rights, equality and a republic on the foundation of these aspirations. Charter 08 represented the common aspirations of mankind and the commitments of civilized society.

Liu Xiaobo was imprisoned repeatedly for his views and political statements since the 1989 Democracy Movement in China and Tiananmen protests. On 25 December 2009, he was sentenced to eleven years of imprisonment for inciting subversion of state powerЁ for authoring and promoting Charter 08. But even in prison, Liu stands firm on Charter 08 and the conviction of a democratic China. He is a symbol of the will and the conscience of the Chinese people.

On 8 October 2010, the Nobel Committee awarded the Nobel Peace Prize to Liu Xiaobo for his long and non-violent struggle for fundamental human rights in ChinaЁ. This is an encouragement for the democratic movement in China, and a victory of the common values of all humanity.

We write to urge you to release Mr. Liu Xiaobo immediately and unconditionally to allow him to go to Norway with his wife, Madam Liu Xia, to receive the Nobel Peace Prize on 10 December 2010 and freely return to China afterwards, so that the whole world can witness Liu Xiaobos selfless dedication and noble spirit.
